SEXUALITY AND MINISTRY
Historical and Philosophical
Cole, William E. Sex and Love in the Bible. New York: Association Press, 1959.
An old work, somewhat higher critical in textual study, but valuable as a resource for topics discussing love and sexuality in OT and NT. One chapter on the Bible and the Kinsey Report.
Kubo, Sake. Theology and Ethics of Sex. Washington/Nashville: Review and Herald, 1980.
Superb and scholarly look at just what the title says. Brief, but good overview of early church fathers and their views (mostly negative) on sexuality. Excellent bibliography and notes.
Money, John. The Destroying Angel. Buffalo, New York: Prometheus Books, 1985.
The sub-title of this volume is "Sex, Fitness and Food in the Legacy of Degeneracy Theory, Graham Crackers, Kellogg's Corn Flakes and American Health History", which aptly describes the volume. Tracks the development of the health reform movements in American culture during the mid-1800's and includes some shocking informative quotes from Kellogg and other contemporary leaders of the day. E.G. White's work, when contrasted with her peers as reflected in this book, is viewable as remarkably balanced and reasonable. Written by Money as an expose of puritanical and strange directions taken by some cultural leaders of the 1800s.
Pearson, Michael. Millennial Dreams and Moral Dilemmas: Seventh-day Adventism and Contemporary Ethics. Cambridge and New York: Cambridge University Press, 1990.
Written by an Adventist professor of Ethics and Newbold College, the book takes on issues such as abortion, contraception, homosexuality and the role of women from the beginning of the SDA church up through 1985. The materials are presented within an understanding of the general social and historical contexts of their development. Extremely well researched and annotated. A good source of study to examine the issues of sexuality and how those issues have been defined and re-defined in Adventist thinking.
Springett, Ronald M. Homosexuality in History and the Scriptures. Washington, D.C.: Biblical Research Institute, 1988. Careful and complete survey of homosexuality in the Bible and history from a scholarly point of view. Focused on this single topic and usable in spite of the full page of errata which is included.
White, E. G. Testimonies on Sexual Behavior, Adultery, and Divorce. Silver Spring, M.D.: E. G. White Estate, 1989.
A compilation gathered by the E. G. White Estate "not intended for general circulation" originally, but now widely available. The initial intent was to provide a resource for "church administrators and ministers who must deal with questionable moral conduct." A very usable text for watching the development of E. G. White's thought and counsel across her ministry. Carefully noting the dates the statements will provide the reader with a good picture of the widening of Mrs. White's ideas across time.
Sexuality and Ministry
Fortune, Marie M. Is Nothing Sacred? San Francisco: Harper-Collins, 1992.
The absolutely gripping story of a pastor/predator who sexually abused women in his congregation and the resultant trauma to them, the church and the community. The author was a key player in helping the abused women come to grips with their trauma. Excellent appendix detailing a step by step process of how a church can/should deal with clergy sexual misconduct.
LaHaye, Tim. If Ministers Fall, Can They be Restored? Grand Rapids: Zondervan Publishing, 1990.
La Haye's answer is "Yes--but with careful counseling and ongoing accountability." He discusses what the congregation can do, why pastors fall, and presents an 8-step model of restoration. Thought provoking.
Muck, Terry C. editor. Sins of the Body. Dallas, Texas: Word Publishing, 1989.
An excellent over-all resource for those who want the wide view of issues from an exquisite essay on a pastor's personal struggle with pornography to examples of how to counsel the sexually abused church member. Part two, Pastoral Precautions, deals with perils, problems and mine fields a pastor will face in the sexual arena. Part four, The Way to Recovery, helps pastors restore members who have had affairs. Excellent resource, worth owning.
Mylander, Charles. Running the Red Lights. Ventura, CA: Regal Books/Gospel Light, 1986.
Narrative discussions of how and why pastors fall and the rough road back from the edge of disaster. Usable chapters on what to say to a friend who is in or headed for trouble, and another on dealing with the spouse who is having an affair.
Rassieur, Charles L. The Problem Clergymen Don't Talk About. Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1976.
One of the first works to look at how to recognize and deal with pastors and sexual attraction to female counselees. Frank, usable and realistic. A primer and valuable volume. Quick reading. Great concepts.
Rediger, G. Lloyd. Ministry and Sexuality. Minneapolis: Fortress Press/Augsburg, 1990.
A basic reader on the topic. Part one addresses the broad view of ministry and sexuality; parts two and three deals with specific brief case studies of affairs, addiction, incest, pedophilia, rape, sexual harassment, homosexuality, masturbation, etc. Part four begins to develop an ethic of clergy sexual behavior. This book is part of the video tape kit produced by the G.C. Ministerial Association (see below).
Rutter, Peter. Sex in the Forbidden Zone. New York: Fawcett-Crest, 1989.
This is a "must have" volume for any professional in the field of ministry, therapy, medicine, education, or law. Rutter's research spans 1,000 women who have been sexually involved with their minister, doctor, lawyer, teacher or therapist. He carefully draws the lines of where and how things move from being a trusted professional to a private predator. His chapters on the brokenness of men and of women help the reader understand the dynamics of what takes place when men in power betray women's trust. This book is a must read--must heed work. The best in its field.
SEXUALITY IN GENERAL
Calderone, Mary S. and Eric J. Johnson. The Family Book About Sexuality. New York: Harper and Row Publishers, 1981.
Although not from a clearly Christian perspective, these two well known Quaker authors discuss a wide range of sexual issues from self understanding to an alphabetized short (69 pages) encyclopedia which gives quick definitions and explanations of sexual terms and slang. Tastefully done drawings and a good bibliography enhance this book's value.
Carnes, Patrick J. Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction. Minneapolis: CompCare Publishers, 1983.
Carnes is one of the first authors to publish on the concept of sex as an addiction. The book shows how sexuality can develop into a destructive addiction. Explanations of the danger signs, family systems and a 12-steps to recovery, all combine to make this a must-read book for any professional who works with sexually oriented counseling or for those who seek information on how a good gift of God can become a tyrant and task-master.
Demarest, Robert J. and John J. Sciarra. Conception, Birth and Contraception. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1969.
Beautifully illustrated with tasteful pastel drawings, this volume is helpful in sexuality education, pre-marriage counseling or marriage counseling. The text is brief, accurate and non-technical. The drawings alone are worth the price of the book. Large (8 1/2 x 11) format makes it usable in small group settings.
Grace, Mike and Joyce. A Joyful Meeting: Sexuality in Marriage. St. Paul, Minnesota: International Marriage Encounter, 1980.
Marital sexuality explained in clear, simple, everyday language. Not one of the newest books on the market, but one of the most readable. A small (89 pages) book about a big topic.
Mayo, Mary Ann. A Christian Guide to Sexual Counseling. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan Publishing, 1987.
Although the last half of the book is aimed at counseling, the first half sets out clear, concise foundations for Christian sexual ethics. There is a bundle of usable data in the book to help gain an understanding of sexuality in a Christian context. Very usable and much broader than the title might suggest.
Penner, Clifford and Joyce. The Gift of Sex: A Guide to Sexual Fulfillment. Waco, Texas: Word, Inc., 1981.
Probably the best and most comprehensive of the Christian publications on sexuality. Not a "sex manual," but an open look at sexuality as God's gift to humans to be used as God designed. Great for personal reading and/or for use in marriage or pre-marriage counseling.
Scanzoni, Letha. Sex is a Parent Affair. Glendale, CA: Regal/Gospel Light Books, 1973.
The title tells the purpose. Sexuality education at home. While it is geared to help parents explain sexuality to their kids, 99.9% of the parents who read it will experience major discoveries too. Strong Christian ethics enhance, but do not overpower, the book. Good index and an annotated bibliography.
Wheat, Ed and Gaye. Intended for Pleasure: Sexual Technique and Sexual Fulfillment in Christian Marriage. Old Tappan, New Jersey: Fleming H. Revell Co., 1981.
Dr. and Mrs. Ed Wheat's aim is a book "that will bring a fuller awareness of the pleasures that can be found in God-directed sexual union." Written for the married or soon-to-be-married, the book is exactly what it's title indicates. Index and bibliography.
Wittschiebe, Charles. God Invented Sex. Nashville, TN: Southern Publishing Association, 1974.
The basic question/answer format was developed as Wittschiebe taught and gave workshops all across the SDA Church. His answers deal with general issues and with specifically SDA issues such as "Did Mrs. White say..." The lack of an index is a flaw and makes the book more difficult to use. A ground-breaking volume in SDA publishing.
Zilbergeld, Bernie. Male Sexuality New York: Bantam Books, 1981.
A basic book on sexuality and maleness. The secular author hits at the 10 leading (and destructive) myths of sexuality, then discusses the widest span of sexual issues faced by man. The book is enhanced by its straight forward, non-punches-pulled approach and the index is a must for this 400 page book.
UNDERSTANDING INCEST AND MOLESTATION
Because so many women have been either sexually harassed or abused--and many are incest survivors--all pastors need at least a basic understanding of this human tragedy. The best thing the pastor can do is listen, understand and refer to a trained therapist. The following are among many good books dealing with incest.
Brady, Katherine. Father's Days: A True Story of Incest. New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1979.
The powerful autobiography of an incest survivor. Well illustrates the family dynamics, personal terror and ugly aftermath of incest. A tragic yet true story. The book is very readable and helpful to incest victims who are trying to understand their past and future. Brady's closing lines are worth the price of the book. Speaking to other incested women she says she would have them know two things, "you are not alone" and "you are not to blame."
Forward, Susan and Crag Buck. Betrayal of Innocence: Incest and its Devastation. New York: Penguin Books, 1979.
Not the newest, but one of the best introductory books on the general topic. Good bibliography and listing of treatment resources.
Justice, Blair and Rita. The Broken Taboo: Sex in the Family. New York: Human Sciences Press, 1979.
Helpful in that the Justices go into detail on the signs people outside the family might look for in children who have been involved in abusive situations. Usable, overall view of an important topic.
VIDEO SETS
"Not in My Church" and "Once you Cross the Line." Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence, 936 North 34th Street, Suite 200, Seattle, WA 98103. Phone (206) 634-1903.
The videos are dynamic and well done. Each is 50 minutes long. "Not in My Church" is a dramatized version of the book Is Nothing Sacred? (above). The second video shows flip/flop scenarios of how not to and how to handle sexually loaded situations. The set includes workbooks and a leader's manual. It's a bargain for leadership level organizations and conference/unions.
"Sexual Ethics for Church Professionals." Ministerial Continuing Education, 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904, phone (301) 680-6503, $75.00.
Well done vignettes and panel discussions about ministry and sexuality, legal liability, sexual harassment. 90-minute video, leader's discussion guide and Rediger's book Ministry and Sexuality (above). Great discussion starter. Recommended as a low cost item pastors can introduce at local ministerial associations as a collegial outreach on a very real problem. Very reasonable cost and a good product.
